Employees tend to either be reserved or maybe not focus on the meat and drink of feedback. When asking them open-ended questions such as “What can we improve at this company?” from the start you are making a mistake. You need to define the areas you and the employee are going to cover and be efficient in the questions you are asking.

Cover the following areas :

  • Questions about the specific tasks the employee is undertaking and exploring improvements and feedback. You also include in this section any issues the employee as an individual is trying to address to improve themselves and see how you can help them.
  • Inquire about the team the employee is in and its functions.
  • Ask the employee about their more general outlook about the company’s direction

Individual questions to ask your employees for feedback

These questions relate to their performances as individuals. They may feel they are unproductive or lacking certain elements to fulfill their potential. You can ask them :

  • Do you need more hours or less hours to do the work you do?
  • How well do you work on your own?
  • What responsibilities or skills would you like to take up to try and improve yourself?
  • What has been your most successful project to date?

Questions relating to the team

These questions are about the structure of the employees team, whether the employee is having a positive experience with their direct.

  • Do you feel comfortable working amongst your team members? Do you feel at all left out or not valued by your team?
  • What about the feedback given to you? Does it go into enough depth? Do you need more following or motivation?
  • What about the physical set up of the office. Do you like the layout in the open space? Do you feel the office is up to scratch for you to work properly?

Questions relating to the organization

The great thing about these series of questions is that you can identify how the employee can strategically think when looking upon their role in the organization as a whole. You also can assess their leadership qualities.

Ask them :

  • Where they see themselves in 5 and 10 years time
  • What the organization could do better in terms of project management practices
  • Where the organization must improve in order to meet its goals.
  • Where do you see us compared to our competitors? How would you improve us?

The answers can be open or you may establish a scale, for example: always, from time to time, never or with numbers from 1 to 4, one being the lowest and 4 being the best score.

Depending on the type of surveys, if it is managerial, if it is a 360º survey and its objective, you can establish a series of key points or others.

However, always remember that when asking employees questions, it is better to group them into blocks of the same topic such as: company culture, work, team, resources and leadership.
